2) Carpool
According to the Census Bureau, people in the US commute 30 minutes each day to work, making carpooling a good option if you can’t walk, ride your bike or take public transportation. Talk to your coworkers or visit eRideShare.com to connect with others who drive to a location near you.

3) Stop buying bottled water
Most bottled water is simply filtered tap water. Each year, 47 million gallons of oil are used to make plastic water bottles in the U.S. Do your wallet and the planet a favor, and kick the bottled water habit. If you’re worried about the safety of your tap water or its taste, invest about $25 on a water filter and use reusable bottles to take with you when you leave the house.

Save $200 per year

(3 bottles of water bought per week at $1.50 per bottle)

4) Adjust your thermostat
Heating and air conditioning makes up more than half the energy a home consumes. Saving energy in your home reduces air pollution and greenhouse gases.

To save energy and reduce your electrical bill, set your thermostat to 78 degrees in the summer. When you leave your house, set your thermostat a couple degrees higher. In the winter, set the temperature at 68 during the day and a few degrees cooler when you go to bed. Wear a sweater during the day and use an extra blanket at night to stay warm and cozy.

Change burned out light bulbs with new CFLs and you’ll save on electrical bills and help cut greenhouse gases emitted by coal-fired electricity plants. Fluorescent light bulbs cost a little more than regular light bulbs, but they last for about 7 years.
